Orange County Transportation Authority, Orange County, California

Known for its year-round sunshine, beaches, and iconic theme parks, Orange County is a both a popular destination for travellers and a densely populated centre for education, culture, and business.

Home to a number of universities and host to waves of tourists throughout the year, Orange County’s public transportation system is essential to keeping residents, commuters and visitors moving throughout the county’s 34 cities and unincorporated areas.

About Orange County Transportation Authority

The Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) is responsible for programs and services that impact every aspect of transportation within the state’s third largest county.

Safety and security are a constant focal point for OCTA, whether on buses or at transit stops. Many of the transit bus stops serviced by the agency do not have electrical connection available. With a goal of improving passenger experiences, while reducing pass-bys, a reliable solar solution was needed.

Urban Solar worked closely with OCTA staff to select where each pole-mounted system would be installed. Individual site inspections for each location were performed to determine that systems were installed in solar viable locations.

Urban Solar supplied 300 PV-Stop systems, a UL Listed solar powered system with high intensity LED lighting for security and bus driver notification.

Some of the benefits of the new system include:

  • Improved safety for riders
  • Reduction of pass-bys
  • Stand-alone power; no trenching and no utility bills
  • Independently tested for safety, Underwriters Laboratories (UL) listed
  • Simple to install
  • Reliable, high performance LED lighting
  • Industry leading warranty

The result was a new wave of safer, efficient and brightly lit solar stops that capitalized on Orange County’s consistent sunlight and met OCTA’s need for an off-grid lighting solution.
